UBC Boathouse is one of those tucked away little venues that often gets missed by couples looking for a unqiue location for their wedding ceremony or reception. It’s not where you think it is – nope, UBC Boathouse isn’t located on the UBC Endowment Lands, it’s located in Richmond along River Road and just a short skip ‘n jump from the brand new 2010 Vancouver/Richmond Olympic Skating Oval.
What makes it unique is its comtemporary architectural design and location next to water. It’s located on the middle arm of the Fraser River where you can see airplanes fly overhead throughout the day. It’s relatively easy to get to from downtown Vancouver (over the Oak or Granville Street Bridge) and road-side parking is free (at least while Olympic events aren’t on). The venue is built to host events such as weddings, so it’ll have all the little amenities you require for your special day (e.g. built in A/V system and projection screen, bridal/change room, etc.). However, the interior is simple (almost to the point of being austere), so you’ll need to invest in lots of decorations if you want to ‘wow’ the place up.
Your guests will really appreciate hanging out on the large floating boat launch that doubles as an outdoor deck. If it’s a dry day, having an outdoor ceremony would be spectaclar. The indoor venue isn’t huge, but large enough for a medium sized wedding. The venue has floor to ceiling windows and a stunning sunset view.
For those looking for locations for wedding photos, there are many nearby. Some favorite places include Steveston Village, Richmond City Hall, and a number of parks and beaches in Richmond and even some along the banks of the Fraser River. A good wedding photographer will know all the best locations for photos of you and your wedding party.
